Erica: How does it feel to be an African American Social Worker in Council Bluffs?
Lucy Reed: It feels wonderful. Even though I’m retired I still use my skills here in Council Bluffs.

Biography
Although Lucy Reed wanted to be a special Education teacher, her career as a Social Worker has brought a great deal of happiness to her and to the citizens of Council Bluffs. Her determination to gain her education is reflected in her current post-retirement goal of setting up her own private practice.

Erica Hampton: Hi I’m Erica Hampton.
Bernie Bryant: Hi I’m Bernie Bryant.
Erica and Bernie: And we’re interviewing Lucy Reed.
Erica: What kind of education did you have and where did you go to get it?
Lucy Reed: I have a Master’s Degree in social work and I went to New Orleans Southern University.
Bernie: Did you plan on being a social worker or was there something else on your mind? If so what did you plan on doing?
Lucy Reed: I planned on being a teacher, a Special Ed teacher.
Erica: When you became a social worker what was your first job?
Lucy Reed: Family preservation program at Kingsley House.
Bernie: Did you major in social work or take any social work classes during school?
Lucy Reed : Yes. I majored in social work so I took a lot of social work credit courses.
Erica: What are you doing now? Are you happy with your job?
Lucy Reed: I’m retired as of 2001. And I was very happy with my job.
Bernie: What do you plan on doing in the future? And do you think it will be successful?
Lucy Reed: My plan is once I leave Council Bluffs and return to New Orleans is to try to set up private practice and I do think it will be successful.
Erica: How does it feel to be an African American Social Worker in Council Bluffs?
Lucy Reed: It feels wonderful. Even though I’m retired I still use my skills here in Council Bluffs.
