Biography

Owning a small business is not easy, but Janice Cotton has made her cleaning business, Angel Cleaning Service, thrive in the Omaha/Council Bluffs area. With a family and a business, she has still found time to take the classes she needs to further her dream.

Jordan Sanford: Hi! I’m Jordan Sanford and I’m interviewing Janice Cotton. What does it feel like to be a African American Professional in Iowa?

Janice Cotton-Hampton: I enjoy having my own business and flexible hours, and the ability to assist my family in situations that may arise where I couldn’t do if I worked an eight to five job.

Jordan: What challenges did you face when you were, when you started your small business?

Janice Cotton-Hampton: There was the challenge of startup finances and lack of knowledge.

Jordan: Did any of those challenges come from your race?

Janice Cotton-Hampton: To a degree it possible could have, but lack of knowledge due to the fact I was a black female and not able to make the proper connections.

Jordan: You are currently back in college. What courses are you taking?

Janice Cotton-Hampton: I’m taking business administration to help further my business ability.
